The Beauty of the Red Sea: A Diver’s Paradise

The Red Sea is one of the most diverse and stunning diving destinations in the world. Its warm, clear waters, abundant coral reefs, and thriving marine life offer something for every diver. Whether you’re in search of colorful fish, majestic sharks, or historical wrecks, the Red Sea has it all. The northern part of the Red Sea is particularly renowned for its diverse diving spots, ranging from shallow lagoons to deep walls and peaks. Divers can choose to embark on shore dives, day boat excursions, or experience the utmost convenience of a full board boat that takes you to the finest snorkeling spots in the region. Here are some of the highlights of the Best Of North scuba diving Red Sea Dive Sites:

1. SS Thistlegorm: Exploring History

The SS Thistlegorm undoubtedly ranks as the most famous wreck in the Red Sea and holds a fascinating history. Once a British cargo ship, its tragic fate unfolded in 1941 when German bombers sank it while transporting supplies to the Allied forces in Egypt. Resting at a depth of 30 meters, it now serves as an underwater museum, adorned with trucks, motorcycles, tanks, guns, and other war equipment. Explore its decks, cabins, holds, and engine rooms, and witness how it has become a haven for numerous fish and corals. For an exclusive experience away from crowds, opt for dives from a full board boat.

2. Shark and Yolanda Reefs: A Natural Underwater Spectacle

Located within the protected area of Ras Mohammed National Park, the Shark and Yolanda Reefs exemplify the natural wonders of the Red Sea. Shark Reef, with its awe-inspiring vertical wall dropping to over 700 meters, is adorned with soft corals, gorgonians, sponges, and sea anemones. Marvel at the schools of antias, fusiliers, butterfly fish, and angelfish, as well as larger inhabitants such as napoleons, giant trevally, and barracudas. Yolanda Reef derives its name from a Cypriot cargo ship that ran aground in 1980, leaving behind toilets, tubs, and fish basins among the corals – offering unique and fun photo opportunities.

3. Elphinstone Reef: A Shark Lover’s Haven

For encounters with pelagic fish and impressive sharks, Elphinstone Reef stands as an ideal location. This submerged reef, near the resort of Marsa Alam, features two plateaus at its northern and southern ends, attracting tuna, horse mackerel, barracuda, and archerfish. However, the main allure here lies with the sharks. Keep an eye out for hammerheads and whitetip reef sharks gracefully gliding through the deep blue waters.
